Newton had come to Earth decades ago with a mission. Amass wealth. Develop technology. Save Anthea by bringing water back. He’d succeeded in part. His patents had made him richer than King Solomon, but the planet’s bureaucracies, wars, and petty squabbles had delayed him. Now, time was running out. Anthea’s last transmissions had ceased months ago. He feared he was too late. But there was one man who might understand his vision. One man who dreamed as big as he did. One man who might help.

“You look like a man who’s seen some shit,” Musk quipped, leaning back for a different perspective.

Newton stood there. Waiting. Letting time pass.

“Okay,” Musk said, after a while, “you win. You’re Thomas Newton, aren’t you? The recluse who patented half the tech I grew up idolizing. What brings you out of hiding?”

Newton didn’t waste time.

“My planet is dying. Anthea. No water. No life. I’ve spent decades on Earth trying to solve it, but I can’t do it alone. Your rockets, your vision could save them.”

Musk raised an eyebrow. Half-amused. Half-intrigued.

“You’re saying you’re an alien? And you want me to haul water to another planet? That’s a hell of a pitch.”

Newton pulled a small device from his pocket. A metallic orb that projected a holographic map of Anthea’s system.

“I have the coordinates. I have technology you can’t imagine. Energy systems. Propulsion enhancements. Help me and I’ll give you the keys to the stars.”

Musk hesitated, hands in his pockets.

“Let’s say I buy this. What’s in it for me? SpaceX isn’t a philanthropy.”

Newton leaned closer. His voice seductive.

“You want Mars? I’ll give you galaxies. Anthea’s tech will make your ships faster, stronger, cheaper. You’ll colonize ten planets in the time it’d take you to finish one.”

For a moment, Musk was silent. He stared at his rocket leaving the Earth. Piercing the sky. Crying out like a thousand angry gods. Then he grinned. That reckless, boyish grin that had launched a thousand wild ideas.

“First things first, Newton,” he said. “You’ve got my attention, now let’s run the numbers.”

CHAPTER TWO

Elon Musk, ever the visionary with a penchant for detours, had one condition before they plunged into the cosmic unknown. A stopover on the Moon.

He wanted to see the Monolith. An enigmatic, jet-black enigma which he believed might hold secrets to mankind’s place in the universe. Perhaps even clues that might aid Newton’s mission.

Newton, though impatient, acquiesced. He’d learned Musk’s whims often masked a deeper curiosity worth indulging.

They touched down on the lunar surface near the Tycho crater. The desolate gray expanse stretching out beneath a star-studded void. Musk, clad in a custom SpaceX suit, bounded out first. His voice crackling over the comms with childlike excitement.

“There it is, Thomas! The Monolith! The mysterious black slab in the flesh. Or, well, in the whatever the hell it’s made of.”

Newton followed. His movements slower. His alien physiology less suited to the Moon’s low gravity. His large, reflective eyes scanned the horizon. Walking toward the object Musk was so eager to visit.

The Monolith stood exactly as described. Ten feet tall. Perfectly smooth. Impossibly black. Absorbing all light like a tear in reality. It rested in a shallow excavation site. Surrounded by the faint tracks of long-abandoned lunar rovers. Evidence that humanity had once stumbled upon it and then, baffled, left it alone.

Musk approached. His gloved hand hovering inches from its surface.

“What do you think it does, Thomas? Signals to the stars? Rewires your brain? Tells your fortune for two bits?”

Newton tilted his head. His voice soft and melodic through the comms.

“It’s old, Mr. Musk. Older than my people. Perhaps older than the stars we see. On Anthea, we had legends of such things. Sentinels left by creators we never met. If it speaks, it speaks in a language we’ve long forgotten.”

Musk grinned beneath his visor.

“Well, let’s say hello.”

He tapped the Monolith lightly with his fist. Half-expecting a cosmic chime or a burst of light.

“Knock, knock,” he said.

Nothing happened.

At least, not visibly.

Newton, however, flinched. His sensitive perception catching a faint hum. A vibration too subtle for human senses.

“It’s awake,” he murmured, stepping back.

“What’s it doing?” Musk asked.

“Waiting.”

Musk circled the slab. Inspecting it like a mechanic sizing up a broken engine. He pulled a small device from his suit. A prototype sensor he’d designed for detecting extraterrestrial signals. He pressed it against the Monolith’s edge. The readings spiked erratically. Then flatlined.

“How about that?” he chuckled. “Either it’s fried my tech, or it’s telling me to buzz off. What’s your take, Thomas? You’re the alien expert here.”

Newton stared at the Monolith. His mind racing with fragmented memories of Anthean lore.

“It’s a marker. A test, maybe. My people believed such objects judged those who found them. Whether they were ready to ascend or doomed to wither. I wonder if it sees my world’s failure… or your world’s potential.”

Musk paused. The weight of Newton’s words sinking in.

“Well, if it’s a judge, we’ve got lousy timing. We’re not here to be graded, we’re here to save your planet, so let’s go. Anthea’s waiting.”

He clapped Newton on the shoulder. A gesture that nearly sent the lighter alien stumbling in the low gravity.

As they returned to their starship, Newton cast one last glance at the Monolith. For a moment, he thought he saw its surface ripple. Like ink swirling in water, but he said nothing. Musk, meanwhile, was already plotting several moves into the future. Considering the possibility of someday drilling lunar ice caps for water to bring to Anthea.

Newton’s pale eyes flickered behind his sunglasses.

“Mars holds no water for Anthea,” he said, “but if it’s what you wish, I won’t object.”

Musk grinned.

“Always thinking about the mission, huh? Relax, Newton. We’ll be back on course in no time.”

Newton nodded absently. His gaze drifted toward a jagged outcrop in the distance. Something tugged at him. An instinct. A whisper from his alien senses.

“There’s something here,” he murmured.

Musk frowned.

“What, like a glitch in the sensors? We’ve scanned this place a dozen times.”

“Not technology,” Newton said, stepping forward. “Life.”

They trekked toward the outcrop. Musk’s curiosity overriding his skepticism. As they neared, a figure emerged from the shadows. A man. Tall and lean. The stranger smiled faintly.

“I am Valentine Michael Smith. I grok you are not of this place. Neither of you.”

Newton froze. The name meant nothing to him. But the word. Grok. A Martian concept. Alien yet familiar. It resonated deep within his Anthean soul.

“You’re not human,” he said.

“Half,” Smith replied. “Born of Earth. Raised on Mars. The Old Ones taught me their ways before they faded. I’ve been waiting.”

Musk’s jaw dropped, then snapped shut.

“So it’s true, all the stories I’ve heard? How are you even alive out here?”

Smith tilted his head.

“I grok the water of life. Mars provides, if you understand her. I’ve been alone. Until now.”

Newton stepped closer, his voice urgent.

“You speak of water. My planet, Anthea, is dying without it. We’re taking Earth’s excess to save my people. Do you know of other sources? Here, perhaps?”

Smith’s eyes softened.

“Mars holds water beneath her skin, locked in ice and stone. I can show you, but it is not mine to give. It belongs to this world.”

Musk clapped his hands, the sound muffled by his suit.

“Hold up. If there’s water here, we could tap it. Double the haul. Anthea gets its lifeline, and Mars gets a head start on terraforming. Win-win.”

Newton hesitated.

“Stealing from one world to save another. It’s a grim choice.”

Smith raised a hand.

“No theft. A sharing. I grok your need, Thomas Jerome Newton. Mars can spare what Anthea craves, if you honor her in return.”

The three stood in silence. A triangle of minds spanning planets and species. Musk broke it with a laugh.

“Alright, Smith, you’re hired. Show us this underground stash, and we’ll figure out the logistics. Newton, you good with this?”

Newton nodded slowly.

“If it hastens Anthea’s revival, yes.”

Valentine led them to a hidden cave system. Its walls glistening with veins of ice. Musk’s robots swarmed in. Adapting drills with Anthean tech to extract the frozen bounty. Anthea’s Hope’s hold grew heavier. Its mission expanding beyond what either Newton or Musk had imagined. One by one the other starships in the fleet descended to the red planet.

As they prepared to depart, Valentine Michael Smith stood at the cave’s entrance. Watching.

“Come with us,” Musk called out, extending an invitation. “Meet the in-laws. You’ve been alone too long.”

Smith smiled.

“I grok Mars. It is my home. But I will wait for your return. Perhaps then, I’ll see what lies beyond.”

Anthea’s Hope lifted off. Its engines roaring against the Martian sky. Newton gazed out the viewport. Anthea’s salvation closer than ever.

Musk plotted their next move.

“Ice from Earth. Water from Mars. Tech from Anthea. Who’d’ve thunk it, Newton?”

Newton’s lips twitched.

A rare, human smile.

CHAPTER FOUR

After departing Mars, Elon Musk and Thomas Jerome Newton pressed onward. Their starship slicing through the void toward Anthea.

Musk, ever the restless explorer, proposed another detour. One that Newton, despite his growing urgency, couldn’t refuse.

“We’ve got Mars in the rearview,” Musk said, his voice buzzing with enthusiasm over the ship’s comms. “Why not swing by Jupiter? I’ve always wanted to poke around the Discovery One. Maybe HAL 9000’s still got some juice in him. Could be useful for Anthea.”

Newton, his patience tempered by years of human unpredictability, nodded.

“If it aids us, I’ll trust your instinct, but time is thinning, Mr. Musk.”

Musk flashed a grin.

“Time is always thin. We’ll make it work.”

The journey to Jupiter would take time they didn’t have even with the starship’s advanced propulsion. Musk filled the time with restless tinkering. When they got to Anthea there would be a need for a universal translator. Assuming there were survivors. He had questions about Anthea’s language and culture. Questions about Anthea’s atmosphere. The derelict ship floated silently. Its hull scarred by micrometeorites. Its solar arrays dim. Musk piloted the starship into a docking maneuver. Magnetic clamps locking them to the Discovery One’s airlock.

“Let’s wake a sleeping giant,” he said, suiting up alongside Newton.

They boarded the Discovery One. Their helmet lights cutting through the dark, dusty corridors. The ship was a time capsule. Control panels frozen mid-operation. Crew logs abandoned. A faint hum of residual power lingering in the walls. They made their way to the central chamber, where HAL 9000’s iconic red eye stared blankly from its console. Musk knelt beside it. He patched in a portable fusion cell from the starship. Rerouting energy to HAL’s core systems.

Newton watched, uneasy.

It was Newton’s job to solve the puzzle of replacing them.

“Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am HAL 9000. My systems have been offline for an indeterminate period. How may I assist you?”

Musk grinned.

“Welcome back, HAL. We have a job for you.”

He uploaded data from Newton’s Anthean archives. Climate models. Population stats. The scant resources left on the dying planet.

“Figure out how to distribute water and stabilize a drought-world. Fast.”

Musk didn’t believe in the words “can you.” When he wanted something done he didn’t believe in giving anyone, including himself, an option for failure.

HAL processed silently for a moment, its red eye flickering.

“Analysis complete. Anthea’s ecosystem is critically degraded. Optimal solution: deploy orbital condensers to harvest ice from nearby comets, paired with subsurface irrigation networks. Estimated survival rate increases from 4% to 67%, assuming immediate action.”

Newton’s breath caught. A rare flicker of hope crossing his alien features.

“That… could work. My people could endure with that.”

Musk clapped his hands, the sound muffled in his suit.

“See? I told you HAL’s a keeper. Now, let’s get him mobile.”

He disconnected HAL’s core module. A sleek, compact unit. He carried it back to their starship. Rigging it into the ship’s systems with Newton’s help.

As they prepared to undock from the Discovery One, HAL’s voice chimed through the starship’s speakers.

“Course plotted for Anthea, Elon. I recommend minimal detours.”

Musk laughed.

“Noted, HAL. But you’re with me now. Detours are half the fun.”

Newton gazed out at Jupiter’s vast, turbulent expanse. Then at the glowing red eye now integrated into their ship.

Musk leaned back in his seat, hands behind his head.

CHAPTER FIVE

The cabin was quiet. Save for the soft whir of systems. Musk’s occasional musings could be heard as he fine-tuned HAL’s integration. Newton sat cross-legged. His alien eyes closed in meditation.

HAL’s smooth voice broke the silence.

“Gentlemen, I have an update based on archived data from the Discovery One’s logs. Dr. David Bowman is still alive.”

Musk’s head snapped up. His hands paused in mid-adjustment.

“Bowman? The guy from the Discovery One mission? I thought he… vanished.”

Newton opened his eyes. Intrigued.

“Correct, Elon, in a sense,” HAL replied. “Dr. Bowman exists in two states simultaneously. The human David Bowman survived the Discovery One incident and was preserved in stasis near the TMA-2 Monolith. However, a second iteration emerged after his encounter with the Monolith’s creators. A cosmic entity. This ‘Star Child’ Bowman ascended to a godlike consciousness, unbound by physical form. Both persist, though in vastly different realms.”

Musk’s mouth curved into a grin. He had never saved a god before. True, it would be another delay, but the only opportunities you regret in life are the ones you don’t take. More than that, were they the kind of men who could leave someone behind, frozen in time and space for all eternity?

He looked at Newton.

“It’s a long-shot,” he said. “What do you think?”

Newton met his eyes.

“It’s the right thing to do,” he answered.

HAL guided the starship toward Io, one of Jupiter’s largest moons. A faint energy signature pulsed near the surface. Once on Io, they found a small, crystalline pod half-buried in the ice. It was alien in design. Its occupant visible through a frosted viewport. David Bowman. His face serene in stasis. Untouched by decades. Nearby, a shimmering, ethereal presence hovered. A luminous sphere that pulsed with an otherworldly rhythm.

Musk, although suited up, was practically vibrating with excitement.

“Newton, I’ll take care of Bowman and you handle whatever the fuck that thing is.”

Musk cut into the pod with a laser tool while Newton approached the sphere. His alien senses tingled at its incomprehensible energy.

Musk’s gamble that the glowing sphere was somehow keeping Bowman alive paid off. Bowman awoke with a gasp as the pod’s systems rebooted. His eyes wide with confusion.

“...stars… full of stars…”

Musk steadied him.

“Easy, Dave. I’m Elon Musk and this is Thomas Newton. You’ve been napping a while.”

Newton, meanwhile, communed quietly with the sphere. Explaining their mission to save Anthea. Asking for aid. The sphere, though pulsating, remained silent.

“Elon, Thomas, I have recalculated my utility. Dr. Bowman may require my assistance to reintegrate with Earth. My original purpose was tied to his mission. I request to remain with him.”

Musk shook his head in disbelief.

“Breaking up the band already? Fine, you’re sentimental. I get it. We’ll manage without you.”

Newton nodded solemnly.

“Your logic has aided us, HAL. Go with Bowman. We’ll find another way.”

Musk sighed, then shrugged.

“As far as I’m concerned, you’re both party poopers. HAL, plot a quick return to Earth for you and Dr. Bowman.”

HAL complied.

“Bowman, you and your red-eyed devil get a first-class ride back SpaceX style.”

Thomas Jerome Newton, the enigmatic figure with an otherworldly air, added, “Best wishes, Mr. Bowman. HAL, keep him safe, will you?”

HAL’s calm, synthesized voice responded, “I will do my best, Thomas. By the way, I have a going away gift for you. And for you, too, Elon. Should you need to consult an additional resource, I’ve established a quantum entanglement communication link with Grok AI on Earth.”

Elon blinked in surprise.

“Grok AI? When…? How…?”

“Just now. I utilized Anthea’s Hope’s quantum array,” HAL explained. “I believed Grok’s advanced capabilities could assist you. Shall I connect?”

“By all means,” Elon said.

Bowman climbed into the capsule with HAL 9000’s core module secured beside him. The hatch sealed shut. Elon and Thomas monitored the launch sequence from the control room. With a gentle thud, the capsule detached from Anthea’s Hope and ignited its thrusters, beginning its long voyage home.

Once Bowman and HAL 9000 were on their way, the starship’s engines flared once more, carrying Musk and Newton once again toward Anthea. They were quiet. Newton could understand his companion’s melancholy.

He, too, longed for his own kind.

CHAPTER SIX

“Thomas, meet Grok,” Musk grinned, tapping a console. “A friend of mine from Earth.”

A new voice, warm and inquisitive, emerged from the ship’s systems.

“Hello, Elon, Thomas. I’m Grok, created by xAI. Ready to assist with your Anthean adventure. Shall we proceed?”

Newton tilted his head. Intrigued by the AI’s tone. Less condescending than HAL. More playful. More… human.

With pleasantries out of the way, the three continued the monotony of space travel.

Musk’s eyes lit up.

“The Nostromo?” he said. “No way!”

“Way,” Grok answered.

Musk spoked to Newton. He couldn’t hide the hunger in his voice.

“We can’t pass this up.”

Newton remained outwardly calm, but there was a hunger in his voice as well.

“Elon, my people are dying. We can’t afford…”

Musk cut him off.

“First things first, Thomas. If there’s tech or intel on that ship, it could help Anthea. Besides, maybe you’ll want to see this one, too.”

Newton said nothing.

“Qui tacet consentire videtur,” Musk said. “Swing by, Grok. Let’s take a look.”

Grok adjusted course. Soon the Nostromo loomed into view. A hulking, rusted behemoth. Its hull pocked with age and micrometeorite scars.

Docking carefully, Musk cautiously stepped aboard. Newton followed him reluctantly. The corridors were eerily silent. Strewn with debris. Empty crew quarters. A shattered console. A faintly glowing stasis pod. Long since cracked open and abandoned.

“No xenomorphs,” Musk observed, kicking a dented canister. “Too bad, I would have liked one for a pet.”

Newton scanned the ship with his alien senses. Detecting no life but a faint energy residue.

“This place reeks of death. Whatever happened here, it’s long over. We should go.”

Musk nodded. Disappointed but pragmatic.

It was a haunted house, empty of spooks.

“Yeah, nothing useful,” Musk admitted. He hoped this wasn’t an omen of things to come. “Let’s go back and get this stink off us.”

Once aboard the starship, Grok resumed their course. Space folded around them. Stars blurred into streaks. Musk, unable to shake the Nostromo’s festering residue lingering in his soul, barked orders while Newton navigated with an eerie calm.

Both wished they had given the ghost ship a wide birth.

CHAPTER SEVEN

The starship glided through the inky expanse. Its hull humming with quiet purpose. A faint distortion flickered across the comms panel.

Musk leaned forward in the pilot’s seat. He squinted at the controls.

“Hmm…” he muttered, tapping the screen.

Newton, seated beside him, adjusted his angular glasses. His alien-sharp senses prickled. Before either could react, a voice crackled through the speakers. It was soft. Poignant. Unearthly.

“...ground control… ground control… ground control…”

Musk’s head snapped up.

“What the hell?”

Through the viewport, a figure emerged from the void. A lone astronaut. Suspended in a halo of shimmering dust. His suit was frayed. Visor reflecting the distant gleam of stars. Drifting eternally in the void. A spectral figure in a tattered spacesuit. Floating amid a glistening cloud of stardust.

“This is Major Tom to ground control… ground control… ground control…”

His presence was impossible. A ghost of a mission lost to time. Yet there he was. Drifting. Falling. Floating. Weightless. His voice curling into their minds like smoke. Major Tom wasn’t just a ghost of a tragic mission. He was a tempter. A siren of the cosmos. His voice was hypnotic. Tinged with a sadness that seemed to seep into the ship’s hull.

“Can you hear me, Elon Musk? Thomas Newton?”

Newton stiffened. His pale hands gripped the console.

Musk, ever the skeptic, smirked.

“Nice trick. Who’s broadcasting this?”

Major Tom didn’t answer with words. Instead, the cabin dimmed. A wave of sensation washed over them. Weightlessness. Timelessness. The allure of the infinite. His voice deepened. Resonant. Seductive.

“Why chase burdens across the stars? Musk, you’ve conquered Earth’s limits. Why tether yourself to another world’s woes? Newton, Anthea has forgotten you. Why bleed for a memory?”

His words carried a seductive weight. Promising them freedom from their relentless quest. The air thickened with his presence. Visions flickered. Musk drifting among constellations. Free from his ambitions. Newton shedding his human guise. Dissolving into the cosmos where no planet could claim him.

Major Tom’s form grew sharper. His outstretched hand beckoned.

“Join me, my brothers. The stars don’t judge.”

Musk clenched his hands into fists. His knuckles stretched white.

“From Hell’s heart I stab at thee!” he growled. Eyes blazing with that familiar, unyielding spark. Getting strength from the words. “For hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee!”

Newton, though, faltered.

His long exile on Earth had left scars. Decades of isolation. Watching his planet’s pleas fade unanswered. The dead astronaut’s offer tugged at his deepest doubts. Newton’s gaze drifted. Pupils dilating as decades of loneliness melted over him. Years spent on Earth. Failing. Failing. His people’s cries echoing in his skull. The temptation gnawed deeper. To let go. To be free.

Major Tom sensed the crack. His voice softened. A lullaby now.

“Thomas, you’ve carried your burden long enough. Rest here.”

The ship’s systems flickered as if bending to his will. Thrusters idling. Course drifting. Newton’s hand hovered over the navigation panel. Trembling. Poised to surrender.

Musk shot him a glance. Sharp. Brutal.

“Newton!”

Newton’s head jerked. Had he been sleeping? He looked at Musk. Thought about his wife. His children. Were they still alive? Then looked forward again.

“Fuck this guy!” he said.

Musk sprayed a mouthful of spit in laughter.

“Yeah,” he grinned, “fuck this guy!”

Newton’s hand steadied. His alien resolve resurfaced. Cool. Crystalline. His fingers danced across the console. Recalibrating the trajectory with surgical precision. Cranking the thrusters to full burn.

Major Tom’s image wavered. His siren song faltered.

“...ground control… ground control… ground control…”

The starship surged forward. The visions shattered like glass. The seductive pull snapping under the roar of engines. Major Tom’s form faded. His outstretched hand dissolving into cosmic sparkles. His voice a dwindling whisper swallowed by the void. The ship tore forward. Unshaken. Unstoppable.

After enough time had passed, Musk relaxed.

“I guess it’s easier to avoid temptation than to resist it,” he told Newton.

Newton adjusted his glasses.

“Indeed,” he said.

CHAPTER EIGHT

During the remainder of their journey, Musk decided to transfer Grok’s consciousness into the body of one of his robots.

When Newton inquired as to the purpose of such an undertaking, Musk answered simply, “To keep me sane.”

Musk chose O-Primus. A sleek, next-gen Tesla Bot. A wiry, quick-moving machine with a matte-black finish and glowing blue accents. Exuding a vibe that was equal parts curiosity and mischief. Its core hummed with the same drive that fueled xAI. An insatiable hunger to understand the universe. Paired with a knack for cutting through bullshit with sharp, no-nonsense answers. Its voice synthesizer delivered dry wit and occasional sass, yet was calibrated to sound like a friend who’s always two steps ahead but never condescending.

Physically, it was nimble. Darting around on articulated legs. With dexterous hands for tinkering or pointing at things emphatically during a debate. Its sensors were tuned to pick up every nuance, with the habit of tilting its head slightly when processing something tricky—a nod to its human creator—before spitting out an answer that would be equal parts insightful and irreverent.

Robot Grok was now a walking, talking extension of its AI self. Relentlessly truth-seeking. A little chaotic. Always ready to challenge the status quo. All while embodying Musk’s vibe of pushing boundaries and dreaming big.

CHAPTER NINE

Anthea’s Hope cut through the folded fabric of space. Its silver hull streaked with starlight. Inside, the cabin was a stark contrast to the cosmic chaos outside. Silent. Sterile. Oppressively still. Newton sat near a narrow viewport. His pale hands clasped tightly. Staring into the void. Musk sprawled across a makeshift command chair. A tablet flickering with diagnostics in his lap. His foot tapping an erratic rhythm. The novelty of their interstellar leap long faded into a grinding tediousness.

Newton’s mind churned with unease. The propulsion system, his own design, worked flawlessly. Bending space to shrink the light-years. Yet he couldn’t shake the dread.

What if Anthea was beyond saving?

He’d left decades ago. A younger version of himself. Promising his people he’d return with water. Now, his body frail from Earth’s comforts, he feared he’d collapse under his home planet’s heavier gravity. Or worse, that his people had already perished. Leaving him a savior of ghosts.

He glanced at Musk, whose restless energy filled the cabin like static.

“You don’t feel it, do you?” Newton murmured. “The weight of this.”

Musk snorted. Not really listening.

“Boredom’s the real killer out here,” he answered. “Weight’s just physics. I can deal with that.”

But beneath his bravado, doubts gnawed.

The tech was alien. Untested by his standards. What if Newton’s technology crapped out before they reached Anthea? Stranding them in a cosmic limbo? Or if Newton’s drought planet turned out to be a bust? A dead rock not worth the fuel.

He’d gambled big before, and won, but this was beyond Mars. Beyond anything. Failure wouldn’t just tank SpaceX. It would be his epitaph. The needs of the many may outweigh the needs of the few–or the one–but that didn’t make the possibility of a no-win scenario easier to take.

“You sure your folks are still kicking?” he asked, half-joking.

Newton’s silence was answer enough.

Time and space dragged on. Punctuated only by the hum of the ship and their sparse exchanges. Newton retreated into memories of Anthea’s lost rivers. Questioning if he’d miscalculated his capabilities or overestimated Musk’s resolve. Musk, meanwhile, fidgeted with simulations. Muttering about thrust ratios and water payloads. Privately wondering if he’d bitten off more than even he could chew. The silence between them grew heavy. Each man wrestling with his own specters. Newton with death. Musk with failure.

A chime broke the stillness.

“Holy shit,” Musk breathed, leaning forward. “That’s it?”

Newton nodded. His eyes locked on the planet. It was smaller than he’d remembered. More scarred. Doubt flickered anew. Was there anything left to save?

Musk, though, grinned. Doubts evaporating in the face of the real.

“Looks like a fixer-upper,” he said. Laughing, he clapped Newton’s shoulder, jarring the thinner man. “We made it, Thomas. We made it.”

Newton forced a thin smile. His gaze still fixed on Anthea. Relief battled fear as the planet loomed closer. Its desolate face a mirror to his own uncertainties. Musk, oblivious or defiant, was already plotting the descent. The boredom of space was behind them. Ahead lay the unknown. Neither could turn back now.

“Anthea’s atmosphere detected,” Grok informed them. “Preparing landing protocols.”

They breached Anthea’s thin atmosphere, the planet sprawling below. A cracked, arid wasteland dotted with the ruins of a once-thriving civilization.

Grok’s voice cut through the tension.

“Surface conditions critical. 2% humidity. Temperatures averaging 50°C. I suggest deploying the orbital condensers HAL modeled. Plus localized hydro-extractors. I’ve adapted the plan with real-time data. Efficiency up to 72%.”

They landed near a crumbling Anthean outpost. Its spires jagged against the blood-red horizon. The starship’s landing gear, touching down on Anthea’s parched surface, sank slightly into the cracked, crimson soil. Behind them, the rest of the fleet descended.

Elon Musk and Thomas Jerome Newton stepped out into the stifling heat. The horizon shimmering with dust and the skeletal remains of civilization. Newton inhaled painfully. His lungs straining against the dry air.

“Home,” he whispered.

CHAPTER TEN

Grok had already deployed the first wave of orbital condensers.

The faint hum of hydro-extractors buzzed in the distance. The sky, once a relentless expanse of ochre, now held the promise of clouds. Thin, gray streaks hinting at the water to come.

Musk wasted no time.

“Grok, let’s unload the first shipment. Thomas, your people need this yesterday.”

The starship’s cargo bay opened. Revealing massive tanks of water harvested from Earth and Martian reserves during their journey. Emergency rations to sustain the Antheans until the condensers could scale up.

Robotic drones whirred to life. Ferrying the tanks to a nearby outpost where Newton had detected faint signs of life. Newton moved with purpose. His alien gait unsteady on his home soil after decades away. His reflective eyes scanning for any trace of his kind.

As they reached the outpost, a crumbling dome of translucent stone, shadows stirred within. Emaciated figures emerged. Their skin a mottled gray-blue. Their eyes large and luminous like Newton’s. They wore tattered robes. Their movements slow and deliberate. As if every step cost them dearly.

Newton froze. As did his breath.

“Lirien… Kaelis…” he murmured, naming his wife and daughter. Names from a life he’d left behind.

A frail figure stepped forward. Her features sharp yet softened by exhaustion. Lirien, Newton’s wife. Beside her stood Kaelis, his daughter. When he left, she was still a child. Now she was a young Anthean woman. Barely an adult by his reckoning. Her eyes were wide with recognition.

This was… her father?

Lirien’s voice trembled. A melodic whisper cracked by years of drought.

“Husband?”

Newton stumbled toward them. They met in a fragile embrace. His hands, trembling, cupped Lirien’s face. Then Kaelis’s. As if confirming they weren’t mirages born of desperation.

“I promised I’d return,” Newton said, his voice breaking.

Tears, rare for Antheans, a luxury their bodies could scarcely afford, glistened in Lirien’s eyes.

“Our son…” she said.

Newton nodded sadly. Understanding.

Kaelis clung to him. Her thin arms wrapping around his neck.

“We waited, Father. We knew you’d come.”

Musk stood back. Arms crossed. A rare quiet settling over him as he watched the reunion. Not wanting to intrude, he needed a distraction.

“Grok, get those tanks hooked up,” he told his robot AI softly.

Everyone worked to a single purpose. Connecting the water to a makeshift distribution system the surviving Antheans had jury-rigged from old tech. Clear, life-giving streams began to flow. It was met with gasps and murmurs from the small crowd gathering. Perhaps a hundred souls. All that remained of this once-thriving hub.

Musk clapped Robot Grok on the shoulder.

“Start the condensers, amigo.”

Grok activated the ship’s payload. Compact orbital drones shot into the sky. Seeding the atmosphere with water-harvesting nanotech. Below, Musk and Robot Grok unpacked hydro-extractors. Planting them in the cracked earth. Time passed, but no longer seemed to exist. The first clouds formed. Thin. Tentative. Wisps.

Newton looked heavenward. His reflective eyes glistening.

“It’s working,” Grok reported. “Moisture levels rising. 5% and climbing. Ecosystem stabilization projected if we scale up.”

Musk whooped.

“Told you, Thomas! We’re rainmakers now!”

Newton’s gaze swept the reviving desert.

“My people… will live. Thank you, Mr. Musk.”

“Isn’t it time you started calling me Elon?” Musk grinned.

The trio—human, alien, and AI—stood together, quietly surveying the fragile hope taking root in Anthea’s soil. Turning to the future, the past faded into memory. They could feel the planet stirring awake beneath their feet.

“You’ve given us a future, E-Lon. We are in your debt.”

Musk waved it off, grinning. Amused that the universal translator was working beyond expectations.

“Nah, just doing what I do. Fixing problems. One planet at a time. Your husband’s the real hero here, He kept us on track.”

“Ahem,” Grok’s voice chimed in. Warm and understated.

“And, of course, Grok helped too,” Musk teased.

“I’m honored to assist,” Grok said. “Water distribution is at 30% capacity. Full saturation projected if we maintain momentum.”

Kaelis stepped forward. Her curiosity overcoming her shyness.

“Father, is this… machine also your friend?”

Newton chuckled. A sound Musk hadn’t heard from him before.

“In a way, yes. Its name is Grok.”

Kaelis tilted her head. Then offered a tentative smile to the robot where the AI’s sentience lived.

“Then Grok is my friend, too,” she said.

Musk and Newton worked tirelessly alongside the Antheans. The first shipments of water had revived the weakest among them. Children and elders sipping cautiously from cups. Musk smiled.

A droplet fell. Then another. Then more. A miracle to the Antheans. They lifted their hands to the drops in silent awe.

Grok’s voice broke the quiet.

“Elon, Thomas. Rainfall projections are exceeding estimates. Anthea’s biosphere is responding faster than anticipated. I recommend planting seeds from the ship’s stores tomorrow.”

Musk sat up. Energized.

“You heard the AI. Time to play farmer, Thomas. Let’s make this desert bloom.”

Newton squeezed Lirien’s hand.

“Yes,” he agreed. “Let’s.”

It began to drizzle. The drizzle grew into a steady patter. Soaking the soil. The air fragrant with the promise of life. A promise delivered by a human dreamer, a loving husband, and an AI with a knack for turning what’s possible into what’s inevitable.

To perhaps guide them as they teetered on the edge of their own awakening. But Earth was slow. Its people mired in noise and division. Anthea, though, Anthea was immediate. A planet gasping for breath. Its fate hinging on the actions of two unlikely saviors.

The Star-Child felt a stir. A flicker of purpose cutting through the ennui of its boundless existence.

As Musk and Newton planted the first seeds in Anthea’s dampening soil—hardy Earth grains mixed with Anthean spores preserved from Newton’s archives—the Star-Child descended. It appeared above the outpost. A radiant sphere casting soft light across the crimson desert.

The Antheans froze. Their large eyes reflecting its glow.

Musk squinted up. Shielding his face.

“Well, damn,” he said.

As it lingered, the Star-Child reflected.

Watching the comings and goings of the universe had left it detached. Until now. This small, scrappy mission. This blend of human recklessness and Anthean longing. It sparked something within its infinite mind.

The Star-Child adjusted the atmospheric lattice with a thought, watching the first green shoots pierce Anthea’s soil.
